Paws, Pee, Repeat: The Ultimate Guide to Potty Training Success

Paws, Pee, Repeat: The Ultimate Guide to Potty Training Success

Before You Begin: Potty Training Takes Time & Effort. Bringing home a puppy is exciting, but many new owners underestimate the amount of work that goes into raising a well-behaved dog. The truth? Puppies won’t learn potty training on their own—it requires your full attention, patience, and consistency. What should I expect you say? I’ll tell you… Puppies are similar to a child.
They need frequent potty breaks (sometimes every 30–60 minutes!)
Don’t forget middle-of-the-night bathroom trips
Constant supervision to prevent accidents is a MUST!
Cleaning up messes along the way – helps the pup realize this is not the place to pee.

Set a Consistent Potty Routine
Dogs thrive on routine, and the fastest way to potty train your pup is by taking them out at consistent times every day.
Take your dog outside SEVERAL times a day:
✅ First thing in the morning
✅ After eating or drinking
✅ After naps or playtime
✅ Before bedtime

Rule of Thumb for Puppies:
Did you know that puppies can hold it about 1 hour per month of age (ex: a 2-month-old puppy = 2 hours). Until fully trained, don’t let them roam unsupervised!
Pro Tip: Use a consistent potty spot outdoors so they associate it with bathroom time!

Use a Command for Potty Time
Teaching your dog a cue word will help them understand what you want them to do.
How to do it you ask?
Take your pup to their potty area.
Say a phrase like “Go potty” while they sniff.
When they go, immediately praise & reward with a high value snack!
Why This Works: Your dog learns that potty time = positive rewards!

Prevent Accidents Indoors
The key to fast potty training? Supervision & prevention.
Keep your pup near you at all times—use baby gates or keep them on a leash indoors.
If you can’t watch them, use a crate or playpen to prevent accidents.
Learn their potty signalsSmelling their rear, whining or barking at the door, pacing in circles, sniffing the floor, or suddenly wandering away. You’ll need to act fast when you see any of these signs, so I like to plan ahead. What I mean by plan ahead? – Keep a leash right at the door so you can quickly strap it and take your pup outside as soon as possible. Remember to guide your pup to the same spot every time they need to go, this will trigger the potty/outside association quicker! Once they learn where their special potty area is, your pup will return to it on their own.

What to Do if They Have an Accident?
Don’t punish them! Yelling or rubbing their nose in it won’t help.
Interrupt & redirect—if you catch them mid-accident, say “Oops! Outside!” and take them out immediately.
Clean up with an enzyme-based cleaner to remove lingering scent. Remember even if you don’t smell it, your pup does!

Crate Training for Potty Success Golden retriever comfortably resting inside a white dog crate in a cozy living room setting.
Crates are one of the best tools for potty training because dogs don’t like to soil their sleeping area.
Choose a crate that’s just big enough for your dog to stand, turn, and lie down.
Take your dog straight outside when you let them out of the crate.
Increase crate time gradually to avoid anxiety.
